For the past few months I've been working with my friend Pixel on a web based World of Warcraft model viewing application. The basic idea was to create a system to create avatars based on WoW characters that would always be in sync with their in-game version (and not having to refresh it manualy everytime you change your equipement). In the original plan, we were using the guild rosters to fetch characters equipement, but soon afterward Blizzard announced the Armory website as just to fit our needs for a more practical access to the character data.

With most of the data now accessible, we started working on a prototype website that gave interesting results. I was responsible for nearly everything related to character rendering, while Pixel worked on a custom lua-based web server, that would be fetching data from armory, manage character rendering request and tie everything-up.

To start testing things a bit in more depth we opened an early website that will allow you to generate a character representation that should keep itself in sync with your in-game equipement...

Using this page, you can create a link to your character. You can now use the link where you want at the image will update iself to match you in-game character.

Keep in mind that it is still a very early version, that your character may appear glitched and a handfull of things can go wrong. For the momment your character special features (like face/hair/...) will not appear correctly due to a limitation in Armory. Also your cape/helm hide option will be ignored for the same reasons.

For exemple, here is an image of my current character:

I like the idea of make the avatar customized.
But since we are using black background in our forum and soon gonna swap over to blue I would like to be able to choose from a list of different background colors.
BTW, you really roxor man!

Thanks for making this, it's a great tool!  Glad to get in early and test it out.

My pic looks great, but I can't get the customization to work.  It shows a white tauren in my gear, but that's not ME!  Am I doing something wrong?  The site loads slowly for me at this time of day, I will try later as well.

Testing my signature here!

I was getting my daily fix of WoW Insider and found an article on your service and blam here I am with a snazzy sig and av thanks to you.

Well done guys, I know bog all about code etc so could never do anything like this so thanks for all your time so far and I am really looking forwards to see how this develops.

I plastered my av and sig into my profile on our guild website and posted a link to your site so my fellow guildies can get theirs too, so I suspect our website will be looking much more colourful by tomorrow morning.  Grin

Is there any way to make the full body character pictures bigger?  I'd love to be able to view them full size as well.  Awesome job in any case, very cool!

This is some amazing work guys and thanks for it! Its just hit our forums and I've seen at least two people who have instantly got one of their little models as their avatar. Notably however they don't use the head version, but the full body one! (but thats another thing altogether).

Wasn't really sure where to ask this but here seems like a good place. How long are the generated images stored on your server?

I ask because I can see this little tool becoming quite a trend and while each image is only around 5kb big the storage needed for thousands of wow players is gonna become an issue Smiley.

Edit. Heres a little picture of me!

Hi Grumpy Coders,

Just registered to say thanks for this fantastic web service.

It would be nice to be able to specify a hex colour for the background to better integrate with guild forums (I have a script setup atm to generate a default avatar for guild members that join the forum).

Would it be possible to be able to specify camera rotation and zoom for the full body models? There seems to be alot of space around the char model, and from what I've seen the gnome models actually have the 'correct' zoom, as in the best closeup Smiley

Are you guys planning to keep this online for a while or release the source or make it a commercial/donation app?

10 thumbs up for offering this either way.. very well done.

Cheers,
X
